NaBloPoMo Day 19: A Bit of a Girlie Entry

I'd like to think that I'm pretty low maintenance when it comes to my overall appearance, but I'm a bit vain when it comes to my hair color. While it pains me to admit it, I’m been coloring my hair since I was 17. I've always done it myself, shocking stylists impressed by the color I’ve been able to achieve, and the damage to my hair that I've managed to avoid.

5 weeks ago I decided to have my hair colored professionally. While the cost would be significantly more than If I did it myself, I’m glad I did it. I found a really cool salon in my neighborhood that could take me in on moment’s notice for a free consultation. I wanted to keep the strawberry-blond that I managed to achieve on my own, but I also wanted to try out some highlighting as well. My new stylist/colorist is awesome, and she matched a base color and highlights somewhat effortlessly. Surprisingly, she was able to take me that day to start the process. The whole thing took about 4 hours (to match my roots and color over my own doings.) Anyway, the result looked a little something like this:

I was thrilled at the end result but a bit nervous to receive the bill. Thankfully it was about half of what I expected! I highly doubt any salon back home would have colored, highlighted, cut and styled my head at a price this reasonable. San Francisco 1, Rochester 0.

I'm suppose to get my roots touched up this weekend, and I’m thinking that I might request highlights a little more on the chunky side. I'd also like to go shorter in overall length. What do you think?

It looks nice! I'm not a chunky highlight fan, so I'd say leave it as is, because the color is fantastic.

you make a good point. for some reason i've always wanted purple chunks of color in my hair, and i thought having more highlights could assist with that. yeah, i'm 30.

Wow, shows how much I know about hair. I didn't know it was possible to take 4 hours to get your hair done. I thought that was something reserved for Hollywood special effects people. You say it's a great price but then you start talking about how you're going to go back for more this weekend. Sounds like the ol' drug dealer approach. They got you hooked.

Hmm, I'm reading what I just wrote and realizing it may have come off sounding less "funny" and more "mean". Sorry. I honestly didn't know hair appointments could take that long but didn't mean to imply you are a Hollywood special effect project! I would not recommend purple streaks, but as I was saying I don't know much about hair.

K: no worries, I got it! And yeah, 4 hours is a bit much... but rest assured it normally doesn't take that long. and well, if it weren't for the "darn hair growing so fast thing," i would try to stretch it out as long as i could.

I love the color- the four hours thing is why I never get my hair colored. Unless they give me wine, then I could sit there all night.

Yeah, I got nuthin' on this.

S: well, they gave me endless amounts of tea. i'm sure they'd be cool with me bringing in a bottle of wine to drink.. i mean, people smoke pot out on the street here, WHY NOT!?!?!

M: thanks OK, i'm just happy that you read it :)

I love playing with color and yours looks fantastic!

I like the highlights! I would vote for no more chunky, but hard to tell from one picture. When I had chunky highlights, they looked great. However I didn't keep up with the touch-ups, and after they grew it, my hair was sort of a kaleidoscope of colors. But maybe that's the look you're going for?

FWIW, I can drink a glass of wine at my hair salon. Haven't tried bringing a whole bottle, but I'll have to remember that next time.

And you totally had me suckered in on this post. I thought you were going to tell me that it cost twice as much as it would in Rochester. But it's cheaper? Damn. And you don't need a snow shovel in SanFran? Daaaamn.

b: why thanks b... and re: wegmans, i just pretend it was all a dream. like the newheart finale.

p: yeah, my hair grows kind of fast and it's rapidly approaching kaleidescope phase. the highlights are a little more pronounced now than in the pic, because the red color tinted them a bit during washing and it took a few days to adjust. do they give you this wine for free?

at the salon I used to go to (where my gal used to work), they did offer you a glass. I haven't done it at the place she's at now, but I have seen others with a glass. Time to investigate.

P: yes, I agree!
