I suppose because the reality of that greasy meat patty doesn't make for good tv. Now, you throw in a pingpong ball smiley face and some red wigs, and you got yourself, eh.... mmm?
It's so true. I don't understand the new Wendy's thing, and the Burger King has always scared me. It makes me want to be in marketing so I can sit in on a focus group and see who responds well to these freaks of nature.
With TiVo, I hardly ever see ads any more so I've never seen that Wendy's ad or whatever the heck that snowman is. But I have to say, I like the weirdness of those BK ads. I never thought they were scary, just odd.
BTW, that same Slate author wrote this about the BK ad and says that he thinks the ad works, and graded it an A-:
The King horrifies me on so many levels. (I don't really watch TV, so I've never seen the other ads.) He does NOT want me to buy burgers. I would have taken that criossandwich and thrown it at him!!
Someone told me of their idea to be "the King" for my Halloween party, and I am not amused. We shall see...
Oh, and Kevin... the Mr. Bill looking thing is the mascot for Jack in the Box - a fast food chain (out here) notorious for their love of eColi in the early 1990's.

Oh my GOD you are so onto something. What caused this weird psychosis for hamburger Ad Execs? Probably eating too much of their own food.

And then go home and eat an apple.

The Burger King scares me more than clowns and spiders. Combined.

Apparently there's pretty much one ad agency to blame for all this: http://www.slate.com/id/2163223/
Remember the Subservient Chicken? Yikes.
